At 73 seconds long, this flight from deep inside Papua, Indonesia has to be amongst the shortest in the world. Kegata and Apowo villages are separated by a deep valley which makes the journey from one to the other long and difficult which is where the Pilatus Porter comes in!

Hi Matt,
Another excellent post – informative and enjoyable. thanks a lot.
I hope it’s OK, but I’ve published a link to this post, and the video directly, on my blog [please let me know if you’d prefer not]. I know a lot of people who will enjoy this.
Cheers,
Rodney
Yeah no worries Rodney. Cheers!
This is actually really cool… it’s bound to be the worlds shortest commercial flight!
What’s the price on it one-way?
Very cool, will share on my twitter,
-Swayne
Hi Swayne,
Thanks for the share. We only do this flight when we have a mixed subsidised load of cargo and passengers. The cargo goes to Kegata and the pax to Apowo (having already paid in Nabire where the flight originated), any extra pax jumping on at Kegata have to pay the nominal amount of $5 for a ticket.
Cheers
Matt
Excellent video!

Livin’ the dream, man…livin’ the dream. Keep the dirty side down and keep up the great posts.
Thanks Thomas!
Hello my friend …
Your videos made me more relaxed … I’m scared every time I get on a plane. I think the worst part takeoff …. I feel like my stomach was going out … I’m loving all this … thanks and big hugs!!!
No worries, flying is pretty safe and if you do enough of it you’ll start to enjoy that feeling in your stomach ;o)
Glad I saw your video on LiveLeak.Great blog and videos. Thanks for sharing experiences.Would love to go for a ride. Had the opportunity to skydive out of a Porter a lot in the mid 80’s,amazing airplane to jump out of and also ride down in.The jumpers left at 14,000,pilot rolled it over, closed the door with a stick and dove for the runway pulling out on short final, landing before the jumpers.
It’s quite an aircraft I have to admit! Racing skydivers to the ground is one of it’s many party tricks although I’ve not done any parachute dropping myself.
Matt, I learned about your blog site from a fellow aviator here in the US. I fly the PC-6’s larger brother – the PC12 – out of North Carolina. Kudos on a great job that you obviously love! You do an excellent job of filming your flights and your photos are quite awe-inspiring. I especially enjoy your taste in music – very appropriate 🙂 Cheers brother and keep it out of the trees! Thanks David, the PC-12 looks to be a great step-up from the Porter and might be something I consider in the future. Enjoy it! Cheers
Hi Matt. Excellent video, looks like a blast. I was wondering what the actual distance of the route is? Would settle a debate re this flight vs the Westray/Papa Westray service as the shortest distance flown on a scheduled route.
Thanks! The flight is 1.3nm between the two airstrips. You could probably do it faster then 73 seconds but with the terrain, slippery airstrips and mountain weather, it’s not something you really want to rush!
I know about the one up in Scotland but I think it’s a tad longer distance wise than this. I suspect they can get the time down because there’s no mountains or dodgy airstrips at either end ;o)
Hi… Awesome story and video. Just saw this on CNN.com and was curious on who was the artist for the music you used? Best of luck in your new ventures.
