It took me nearly a week to upload this video from here in Timika, Papua thanks to numerous power-cuts and internet blackouts but finally here’s the first of what I hope will be many videos showing the flying we do out here in the mountains of Papua:
Pilatus PC-6 Bush Flying – Timika, Papua from Matt Dearden on Vimeo.
If there are things you’d like to see in the next movie then please let me know and I’ll see what I can do. It takes a few months to collect all the footage for one movie, so I’m already collecting some of even more airstrips and hoping to try out a few new camera angles to bring you even closer to the action!

Hi Matt,
Nice use of I monster’s Daydream in blue. Wow haven’t heard that tune in ages!!! Some amazing clips in that video. What I wouldn’t do to swop jobs right now as I sit in my office eating a wet sandwich, and looking out onto a grey and very cold day.
Safe flying as always dude!!
Thanks Jon, if it’s any consolation we get occasional wet and grey days here too (bit warmer though!).
Hi Matt,
As always, great movie 🙂
As far as what I would like to see more in your videos: crosswind landings (seen from the cockpit), takeoff’s or landing’s that need a lot of stick and rudder work.
Right now I’m doing the IR. Hope some day can fly as a bush pilot too.
Question: I saw the pinky finger of the right hand pressing or touching a handler (I can´t figure what). This has a reason or it’s just more “comfortable” to handle the throttle that way?
Keep the posts coming, I’m always checking for a new one 😉
Safe flying!
I’ll see what I can do re-crosswinds, although we deliberately fly in the early morning to avoid winds as some of the strips are tricky enough as it is without the added challenge of winds!
My pinky’s not doing anything special there, just a comfortable place to rest my hand.
